Malaysian citizens need a visa to enter Australia, but for most short trips that visa is an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601), not a paper application. The Australia visa for Malaysians that suits a holiday or short business trip is lodged through a phone app, costs AUD 20 per person and allows stays of up to three months at a time over 12 months. The catch is that it is not automatic. The Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur tells applicants to apply at least four weeks before travel, and many guides skip that part.
This guide covers what to apply for, what it costs, how the app works, what to do if your ETA is held for more information, and when the Visitor visa (subclass 600) is the better choice. Information is current to 2 November 2026.
Key facts: Australia visa for Malaysians at a glance

Start with the purpose of your trip. Malaysians are not eligible for the eVisitor (subclass 651), which is for European passports. We compare that visa with the 600 in our eVisitor 651 vs subclass 600 guide. For Malaysian passport holders, the realistic choices look like this:
| Your plan | Usual visa | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Holiday or family visit of up to 3 months | ETA (601) | 3 months per visit, no work |
| Business meetings, enquiries, negotiating contracts, unpaid conference attendance | ETA (601) or Business Visitor stream (600) | Business visitor activities only |
| A single long stay, such as a parent visiting family for 6 months | Visitor visa (600), Tourist or Sponsored Family stream | Must show you are a genuine temporary visitor |
| Repeat trips over many years | Visitor visa (600), Frequent Traveller stream | Up to 10 years, 3 months per stay |
| Age 18 to 30 and want to holiday and work | Work and Holiday (462) | Annual cap of first visas for Malaysia |
| Full course of study | Student (500) | Needs enrolment, funds and English evidence |
Some guides tell Malaysians to apply for a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417). Malaysia sits under the Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462), so that is the one to check.
Australia ETA for Malaysians: the rules that matter
An ETA is an electronic authority linked to your passport number. Nothing goes in your passport, because Australia does not issue visa labels. You can check your visa details at any time through VEVO.
What you can do
- Holiday, sightseeing and visiting family or friends.
- Business visitor activities such as business enquiries, contract negotiation or conferences where the organisers are not paying you.
- Short study or training of up to 3 months.
- Enter multiple times during the validity period.
What you cannot do
- Take paid work. The High Commission names fruit picking specifically, so a farm job offered to you "on a tourist visa" is not allowed. Our guide to what counts as work on a visitor visa explains where the line usually falls.
- Use repeated ETAs to live in Australia. The High Commission states an ETA does not permit repeated extended stays for other purposes.
- Extend it. Visa validity cannot be extended, so a longer stay means a new visa application.
- Keep using it on a new passport. If you renew your passport after your ETA is granted, you need a new ETA.
How to apply for an ETA from Malaysia, step by step
The Australian ETA app is the only channel for lodging. Be wary of any website offering to lodge through a web form.
- Check your phone. You need a device with a camera, NFC and location services turned on. An older phone without NFC cannot read the passport chip. Borrowing one from family is fine.
- Prepare the basics. Have your passport, an email you can access, Australian contact details and a credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay ready.
- Download the app. Get the official Australian ETA app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and accept the terms.
- Scan your passport. Remove any cover and lay the data page flat. Reading the chip is a required step, and your details fill in from it. Hold the phone still while it reads. Home Affairs has short video guides for this part.
- Take a live photo. Use a plain background and good light. Heavy-rimmed glasses may need to come off.
- Answer the questions truthfully. These include criminal convictions, other names you have used and your Australian contact details. Check every auto-filled field against your passport. Names over 24 characters are shortened, which is expected.
- Pay and submit. Pay the AUD 20 fee. The receipt goes to your nominated email.
- Watch your email. Outcome notifications are emailed within 72 hours. Check your junk folder as well as the status in the app.
Applying for your family
Every person needs their own ETA, including infants. You can apply for relatives on the same phone, but each person must be physically present for their photo. The app lets you use "Add another applicant" and pay for everyone in one transaction. Authorised travel agents can also submit, and you still need to be there in person.
You must be outside Australia. The system blocks submission if it shows you are already in Australia or already have an application being assessed.
Why your ETA may not come through straight away
Some travellers expect an instant grant, but the High Commission states ETAs are not auto-approved. Some applications are held for further information. The Malaysian High Commission in Canberra has also warned of processing around one month for ETAs on its undated page. Treat four weeks as your real planning number, even if a friend had an answer within hours.
What to do if more information is requested
You will receive an email with a link to an online form in ImmiAccount. The High Commission's process is:
- Create or log in to your ImmiAccount.
- Open the outcome letter and follow its link to the ETA form.
- Download and complete Form 1554 (ETA request for further processing).
- Upload a copy of your passport biodata page and the front and back of your MyKad.
- Upload the completed Form 1554 under Supplementary Questions/ETA Supplement Information.
- Add evidence that you intend a genuine temporary visit.
Strong evidence for that last step usually includes:
- A cover letter explaining why you are visiting, how long you will stay and what you will do.
- Proof of employment or study, such as an employer letter or enrolment confirmation.
- Proof of funds covering your stay, not just a recent one-off deposit.
- Travel arrangements, kept unfinalised until a visa is granted.
- A list of immediate family members with full names, dates of birth and relationships.
If you are travelling as a family or group, use the Group ID function in ImmiAccount and quote the same Group ID for every member. For the wider document logic, our visitor visa document checklist is a useful reference.
Do not lodge again through the app while this is happening. Home Affairs' notification letter says further ETA applications through the app will return the same result, and the AUD 20 charge is not refundable. Pre-arranged travel is not treated as a compelling reason to speed things up either.
ETA vs Visitor visa 600: cost and differences
The table below shows charges from 1 July 2026. The subclass 600 figures come from published summaries of Home Affairs pricing data, checked as at 21 October 2026. Confirm the exact amount in the Visa Pricing Estimator before you pay.
| Option | Charge per person | Stay | How to apply |
|---|---|---|---|
| ETA (601) | AUD 20 service fee | Up to 3 months per entry | Australian ETA app |
| Visitor 600, Tourist stream, outside Australia | AUD 250 | 3, 6 or up to 12 months | ImmiAccount |
| Visitor 600, Tourist stream, inside Australia | AUD 630 | Up to 12 months | ImmiAccount |
| Visitor 600, Sponsored Family | AUD 250 | Set on grant | ImmiAccount |
| Visitor 600, Business Visitor | AUD 250 | Set on grant | ImmiAccount |
| Visitor 600, Frequent Traveller | AUD 1,845 | Up to 3 months per stay, valid up to 10 years | ImmiAccount |
Visa charges are generally not refunded, even when an application is refused or withdrawn. Card surcharges, biometrics, health checks and translations can add to the total.
When the 600 makes more sense
- You need more than 3 months in one go. Parents visiting a child or new grandchild are the usual example. See the Tourist stream for the 12-month option.
- You have a criminal conviction in any country. Home Affairs' ETA app guidance sends these applicants to the subclass 600.
- Your ETA was refused and you can address the concerns with fuller evidence.
- You travel to Australia often. The Frequent Traveller stream is open to selected Asia-Pacific citizens, and published lists include Malaysia. Home Affairs notes that a lower cost may apply on some visas for eligible ASEAN citizens, so check the estimator for your own case.
A 600 lodged from Malaysia may also ask you to give biometrics. Book through the Australian Visa Application Centre using your biometrics letter, because walking in without an appointment attracts an extra VFS service fee. If you have a sponsor or inviter in Australia, our invitation letter guide shows what a useful letter contains.
What Malaysians should watch in 2026
Malaysian demand is rising. Home Affairs' Visitor Visa Program Report shows 95,540 visitor visa applications lodged by Malaysian citizens in the six months to 31 December 2025, up 9.2%, with 82,178 grants, and 114,174 arrivals. The report does not split the ETA from the 600 for Malaysia, so those numbers cover both.
Two policy points are worth following:
- No Further Stay on visitor visas. On 17 September 2026, the government announced plans to add a No Further Stay condition to all visitor visas, rolled out over the next 12 months. The Home Affairs page does not mention the ETA, and no start date for this measure has been published. We covered the announcement in our September 2026 migration rules update. If you hold a visitor visa and might want to apply for another visa from inside Australia, read your grant notice closely and get advice before you travel.
- Work and Holiday cap. Malaysia's subclass 462 allocation is 1,100 first visas per program year, and it showed as open when Home Affairs updated the page on 28 October 2026. Applicants must be 18 to 30, and Tourism Australia lists AUD 5,000 in savings plus a return ticket or the funds for one. The visa charge is about AUD 840 from 1 July 2026 according to published fee tables, so confirm it in the estimator.
Transiting only? Malaysian citizens can transit without a visa if they fly in, leave on a confirmed onward flight within 8 hours, hold valid documents and stay in the airport transit lounge.
Common mistakes Malaysian applicants make
- Booking first. Both the High Commission and Home Affairs say not to finalise travel until you have a grant.
- Applying the week of travel. Applications lodged late do not receive processing updates, and pre-booked travel is not a compelling reason.
- Paying an unofficial website. Third-party sites can add their own fees on top of the AUD 20. Use the official app, and if you want an agent, check their registration on the OMARA register. The High Commission's scam advice also warns that promises of guaranteed visas or fast-track approval are red flags.
- Travelling on an old ETA with a new passport. Your ETA stays tied to the passport it was granted on.
- Answering the conviction question loosely. Incorrect information can lead to refusal, and it can follow you into later applications.
- Lodging repeat applications. It adds cost and does not change the outcome.
- Planning work on arrival. Paid work is not allowed on an ETA, and the High Commission warns that Protection visas are not a way to stay and work.
What if your ETA is refused?
You will get the decision and reasons by email. The High Commission says you may lodge a new application with additional evidence addressing the concerns. Its FAQ adds that a new application without significant new information is unlikely to change the result. Read the letter for any review rights and deadlines, because they depend on the decision. A common next step is a Visitor visa 600, where a full application lets you explain your circumstances in writing. Disclose the earlier refusal in every later application. If your ETA has been cancelled, the email explains how to request revocation and the deadlines.

Frequently asked questions
Do Malaysians need a visa for Australia?
Yes. Malaysian citizens need a visa before travelling to Australia. For short holidays and business visits, most use the Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601), which is applied for through the Australian ETA app. It counts as a visa even though no label appears in your passport. Longer stays, work and study each need a different visa, such as the subclass 600, 462 or 500.
How much is the Australia ETA for Malaysians?
The ETA has a service fee of AUD 20 per person, paid in the Australian ETA app by credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Every traveller pays separately, including infants and children. The fee is not refunded if the application is refused, so check your details before you submit. Avoid unofficial websites that charge more for the same application.
How long does an ETA take for Malaysians?
The Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur says outcome notifications are emailed within 72 hours, but ETAs are not automatically approved and some need further information. It tells applicants to apply at least four weeks before travel and not to finalise travel plans until a visa is granted. Pre-arranged travel is not treated as a compelling reason to speed up a decision.
How long can a Malaysian stay in Australia on an ETA?
You can stay up to three months each time you enter, and you can visit as often as you wish during the validity period. The ETA lasts up to one year, or until your passport expires if that is sooner. It cannot be extended. If you need longer, you must apply for a new visa, and repeated extended stays are not permitted on an ETA.
Can Malaysians work in Australia on an ETA?
No. The Australian High Commission in Malaysia states that an ETA does not allow paid work, including fruit picking. It covers tourism and business visitor activities such as business enquiries, contract negotiation and conferences where the organisers are not paying you. Malaysians aged 18 to 30 who want to work during a holiday should look at the Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462).
What happens if my ETA needs further processing?
You will receive an email with a link to an ImmiAccount form. Complete Form 1554 and upload your passport biodata page, the front and back of your national ID, and evidence of a genuine temporary visit, such as a cover letter, proof of work or study, funds and a family list. Do not lodge another ETA in the app, because Home Affairs says the result will be the same.
Can I reapply after my Australian ETA is refused?
Yes. The High Commission says you can lodge a new application with additional evidence that addresses the concerns raised. A new application without significant new information is unlikely to succeed. A common next step is a Visitor visa (subclass 600), which allows a fuller written explanation. Read your refusal letter for any review rights and deadlines, and disclose the refusal in future applications.
