Question 1

Can I extend my student visa in Australia after 2 October 2026?

Accepted Answer

Australia does not extend Student visas; you apply for a new subclass 500 visa. From 2 October 2026 most current Student visa holders must apply from outside Australia, unless an exemption applies, such as needing up to 12 more months to finish their current course, progressing to a higher AQF level, doctoral or school study, provider default, or DFAT/Defence sponsorship.

Question 2

What happens if I lodge a student visa application onshore when I am not exempt?

Accepted Answer

The application is invalid. It will not be assessed and does not give you a bridging visa. The former pathway to apply onshore within 28 days after your Student visa expired was removed on 2 October 2026.

Question 3

Can I include my partner or children in a new student visa application?

Accepted Answer

Generally no, unless the main student is a doctoral student, DFAT or Defence sponsored, fully funded by a foreign government scholarship, or holds an eligible Pacific or ASEAN passport. Transitional rules can apply to family already on a Student visa on 2 October 2026. Adding family after grant is no longer possible.

Question 4

Can I switch from a visitor, 485 or working holiday visa to a student visa in Australia?

Accepted Answer

Generally no. Holders of visitor, Temporary Graduate (485), Working Holiday (417/462), 482/457 and several other temporary visas must apply for a Student visa from outside Australia.

Question 5

How much does a student visa cost in Australia in 2026?

Accepted Answer

From 1 July 2026 the Student visa application charge is from AUD 2,500 for the main applicant, plus costs such as Overseas Student Health Cover and health examinations. Check the Home Affairs Visa Pricing Estimator for your exact amount.

Question 6

I applied before 2 October 2026. Do the new rules affect me?

Accepted Answer

No. Student visa applications lodged before 2 October 2026 continue to be assessed under the rules in place when they were lodged, including applications that included family members.
